According to computing.co.uk , a computer glitch meant thousands of UK customers could not use their VISA cards on New Years Eve. Other articles indicated that customers were also unable to draw money from their VISA credit and debit cards, unless they were using their own banks ATM machines.

On one of the busiest nights of the year, thousands of people in the UK found that they couldn't pay for their meal or drinks using their VISA credit and debit cards. If they then decided to go and draw cash, they found that their cards were rejected if using the ATM of another bank and that they could only withdraw cash from their own banks ATM's.

A Visa spokesman said: 'A problem occurred with processing of some transactions on Sunday 31 December for about two hours from 9.30pm. The issue was immediately addressed and fixed.'
